I’m 49 years old and have been dealing with sleep apnea since I was 25. It wasn’t as straight forward for me at that time in my life to get/use a CPAP but I started using one about 15 years ago. At the time I started using it, it changed my life. Since I started using it, there are probably less than 10 days total that I have not used. I use it religiously.

For the past 5 years or so, I started gasping for air again while falling asleep. My doctor prescribed an auto adjusting CPAP but that never quite did the trick. At one point I got a mouth appliance from my dentist. Even using BOTH I would wake from a sound sleep gasping for air (usually as I was falling asleep) about once every couple weeks.

So these days, its getting worse. I’d say about twice a week. The worst feeling in the world. I literally wake up wondering if I’m having a heart attack and dying.

I’ve dropped about 15-20 lbs in the past few months to see if its my weight but it literally had no effect. Its never been about my weight (I’m about 170lbs now). My jaw is set pretty far back and I have never had much of a chin.

About 10 years ago I had surgery to correct a deviated septum. That changed my sleep apnea from severe to moderate (I don’t have access to my last sleep study 5 years ago so I don’t know the numbers)

So I’m wondering if its time for a surgical option? Can I say that my ‘CPAP is failing’? I’m seeing an ENT to talk about options next week. What are my options? MMA? Inspire implant? I’m nervous about the idea of surgery, but at the same time I don’t like feeling like I’m dying several nights a week either.
