This must be the earliest instance of the ‘tennis ball trick’.

Snoring and apnea occur at a much higher rate when laying on your back. Even if you are a side sleeper you probably roll on your back sometimes.

Has anyone tried sleeping with a backpack on or something similar to see if their apneas improve?

A tennis ball wouldn’t do shit, especially on memory foam mattress. There is a “WoodyKnows” branded sleeping backpack but even that looks a bit weak and probably wouldn’t keep you off your back entirely.
