For years I wrestled with stress-induced central serous retinopathy (CSR) in both eyes. Basically a bubble of fluid pushes up like a blister on the underside of the retina which causes a warping of vision and blindspots that can get progressively worse.
For years, I managed my stress through breathing, taking days off, or taking herbal supplements. The blindspots would steadily go away for a week or two and I would be fine.
I’d be fine for a few weeks, but eventually I would start stressing about something and POP the next morning the blindspots would appear.
After about 6 years of this, I started to notice that this wasn’t just stress related; it was sleep related.
When I got stressed, I would start coping by staying up late and playing video games to escape it all. Sometimes I’d play til midnight or 1am even though I had work the next morning. Then I’d wake up with these blind spots.
While all this was going on, my wife insisted I get a sleep study because I snored like crazy. It took me 6 years to listen to her. She was right; bad sleep apnea.
This past fall, I got set up with a machine. Since I’ve been on the machine, I’ve been very rested. I’ve also been going to bed at midnight routinely (my preferred schedule), yet I have not had a recurrence of CSR even once in 4 months!
Seems a majority of the stress which caused the CSR was from choking all night long, and not having restorative sleep! Now I can go to bed when I want and not have these blind spots.
I hope that helps someone!
