I find that if I have alcohol in the evening (not copious amounts and only once or twice a week) I wake up the next day having felt like I have had better quality sleep than on evenings when I have had no alcohol (and usually wake up unrefreshed). The alcohol doesn’t make me fall asleep faster but it does seem to give me more refreshing sleep, which is unusual as alcohol is supposed to prevent you from getting refreshing sleep.
I am on a waiting list for a sleep study for suspected sleep apnea and I wondered what this could mean, i.e. could the effect of alcohol have an impact on the mechanics of sleep apnea? I imagine this is probably pure coincidence as I have read that alcohol is supposed to make sleep apnea worse.
