But just how frequently does this happen? And what can it tell you about the severity of your condition? Read on to learn more about sleep apnea in Irving – and just how often it can strike.

Why is Breathing Interrupted During Sleep Apnea?

The most common reason for sleep apnea to occur is for there to be some kind of obstruction in your airway. For example, your throat muscles and tongue could relax when you fall asleep and fall back on the airway as a result. Other causes might include bone deformities in your jaw or enlarged tonsils. Also, the disorder has been linked to obesity, drinking alcohol before bed, sleeping on your back, and using certain medications.

How Many Times is Breathing Interrupted?

The number of breathing interruptions, called “apneas”, that you experience during the night will vary. Patients who sleep normally will normally have fewer than 5 apneas per hour. If you have mild sleep apnea, you can expect 5 to 14 events each hour, while moderate sleep apnea usually causes about 15 to 29 events per hour. Particularly severe cases of sleep apnea result in 30 or more apneas per hour; that’s potentially hundreds of events every night!

What are the Consequences of Sleep Apnea?

When your breathing is interrupted, your brain is forced to wake the body up to resume the flow of oxygen, preventing you from getting quality sleep. This can leave you feeling exhausted during the day, and you may be at a higher risk for car accidents.

Furthermore, sleep apnea increases your risk for high blood pressure, heart problems, dementia, obesity, and diabetes. The more severe your sleep apnea, the worse these health issues are likely to become.

What Can You Do About Sleep Apnea?

If you’re found to have some form of sleep apnea, you should talk to a sleep dentist right away so that they can devise an appropriate treatment for you. The most common solution for sleep apnea is CPAP therapy, but if you have a hard time tolerating the machine, you might be prescribed an oral appliance instead. The appliance will reposition your jaw so that the soft tissues in the mouth and throat don’t collapse and leave the airway clear. Your sleep dentist might have other suggestions that could help, like changing your sleeping position.

Since you may not even remember having sleep apnea events during the night, it can be difficult to know just how severe the problem is on your own; that said, it’s always important to get help as soon as possible so that you can enjoy a good night’s rest again.

In particular, chronic headaches might be a sign that you have sleep apnea – a disorder that could lead to far worse problems if left alone. Read on to learn why those migraines might be warning you that you aren’t enjoying quality rest.

What is Sleep Apnea?

If you experience frequent pauses in your breathing while you’re asleep, you have sleep apnea. These pauses are usually due to the airway becoming blocked somehow, which can happen hundreds of times during the night. People with sleep apnea keep waking up when their breathing is interrupted; as a result, they often feel tired during the day even if they think they got a full night’s sleep.

How Does Sleep Apnea Cause Headaches?

When your breathing stops, your brain receives less oxygen. This causes the blood vessels in your head to widen, triggering vascular headaches. Sleep apnea-related headaches usually don’t last very long, but they can occur frequently. In general, more severe sleep apnea will result in more painful headaches.

What Other Effects Does Sleep Apnea Have?

You should especially consider morning headaches to be a potential symptom of sleep apnea if you also notice:

  • Loud snoring or interruptions in breathing during the night (which someone else would likely tell you about)
  • A lack of energy during the day
  • High blood pressure
  • A sudden increase of weight
  • Irritability, depression or mood swings

How Can You Treat Headaches Caused by Sleep Apnea?

Typically, treating your sleep apnea will also stop any recurring headaches that it’s causing. In many cases, you can improve your symptoms with an oral appliance. When worn at night, an oral appliance can adjust your tongue and/or jaw so that the airway remains open while you’re asleep. There are numerous different kinds of appliances you can get depending on your needs; for example, some are designed for patients with smaller mouths, while others can accommodate for orthodontic work.

There are also some changes you can make at home that make it easier to overcome sleep apnea. For instance, sleeping on your side (instead of on your back) can prevent tissues in your mouth in throat from collapsing and blocking your airway. Some patients benefit from using a humidifier; adding moisture to the air can sometimes encourage clearer breathing.

It’s important to stick to your sleep apnea treatment once you’ve begun; the disorder tends to worsen over time, and the symptoms associated with it also become more severe as a result. What’s Interrupting Your Sleep? 5 Causes of Sleep Apnea

Since leaving sleep apnea untreated can lead to heart problems and other potentially deadly health issues, it needs to be treated as soon as possible. But to do that, first the underlying source of the problem needs to be found. Here are 5 potential causes of sleep apnea to be aware of.

1. Excess Weight

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep apnea, and in many cases it happens as a result of being overweight. Obesity is highly associated with soft tissues near the back of your mouth and throat; if these tissues relax while you’re asleep, they can block the airway. This is why, in many cases, losing just 10 percent of your body weight might improve your OSA – or even get rid of it entirely!

2. A Smaller Airway

Even if you have a healthy weight, your natural anatomy could still put you at risk for OSA. Anything that crowds the upper airway can block your breathing. For adults, this might mean having a big tongue or small chin. Children with overly large tonsils or glands in their upper airway also tend to suffer from sleep apnea more often.

3. Excessive Alcohol Use

Alcohol tends to relax the muscles near the back of your throat, making it more likely for them to collapse. If you’re suffering from OSA, limiting your alcohol intake can go a long way towards relieving your symptoms.

4. Allergies

Nasal congestion brought on by allergies can irritate and inflame your nasal passageways, causing them to narrow and increasing the chances for sleep apnea and snoring. Luckily, relieving the symptoms of your allergies will also help you sleep soundly again.

5. A Problem with the Brain

Even if your airway remains unobstructed, you might still suffer from a rare form of sleep apnea known as central sleep apnea. This is when the brain fails to send the proper signals to control your breathing. It’s usually a side effect of other conditions that affect the brain stem, including damage done by a stroke or neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s.

5 Tips for Cleaning an Oral Appliance That’ll Let You Rest Easy

Sleep Apnea ApplianceOnce you get an oral appliance to help treat your sleep apnea, you’ll be able to remember what it’s like to feel well-rested again. These devices are essential for letting patients with sleep disorders breathe normally without disrupting their night’s respite. Of course, like any other device that spends a lot of time in your mouth, sleep apnea oral appliances need to be kept clean to avoid serious oral health problems down the road; to do that, follow these 5 essential tips for excellent hygiene.

1. Be Gentle While Brushing

You should brush your appliance whenever you take it out of your mouth, but be careful; you could scratch it if you’re too rough while cleaning. Always use a soft-bristled toothbrush (which is better for your teeth as well), and don’t use abrasive toothpaste on the appliance. You can use water, mild dish soap, or a denture cleaner during this process.

2. Make Sure Your Teeth are Clean

Any bacteria on your teeth will get trapped under your oral appliance. Over time, this will cause it to become discolored and might result in a funny smell; it could also increase your risk for gum disease and cavities. To avoid all of these problems, never put your appliance in until you’ve brushed and flossed as thoroughly as possible. Be sure you’re covering every area, including the gum line and the hard-to-reach spaces near the back.

3. Keep Your Appliance in a Safe Place

Don’t leave your appliance uncovered next to the sink or lying on your nightstand; that’ll make it a prime target for bacteria to accumulate and breed. Always rinse your appliance thoroughly to get rid of any saliva before storing it properly. This might mean putting it in a storage container, but you should follow the instructions provided. Do not leave it soaking in mouthwash, as that’ll end up damaging it.

4. Don’t Expose It to Heat

Each oral appliance is customized for the patient’s mouth, but if it’s exposed to heat, it could become warped and will no longer fit properly. Never use hot or boiling water to clean it, and avoid putting it in direct sunlight. (Leaving it in your car is also a bad idea, so keep that in mind when you’re driving home after receiving your appliance!)

5. Be Careful While Traveling

If you’re traveling by plane, keep your appliance in a carry-on bag and a dry container. Not only will this help you keep track of it, but it’ll also save the device from the heat of the plane’s cargo hold.
