For the past week now, two or three times every night, this has happened to me. One thing I find particularly weird about this is I’m not having nightmares, I know it’s not sleep paralysis either, I’m pretty sure it’s not a hypnic jerk because I’m pretty familiar with what those are, and even though I’m asleep, somehow my body / brain makes me aware that something is happening.
I’ll be sleeping, and then all of a sudden, I get this feeling in my heart or chest like something’s going to burst or like something’s squeezing it, and I immediately wake up and make a loud yelping or squealing or some other weird sort of sound and sit bolt upright in my bed or straight up jump out of it, and I’m hyperventilating, my chest area feels really cold and my heart is pounding really hard, and it takes me somewhere around 1 or 2 minutes to recover and get my heart rate and breathing back to normal, and I can feel the warmth spreading through my chest again.
I went to the hospital on Friday after my second “episode” at 4:00am (sorry I don’t know what else to refer to it as), and I went because up until that point, I thought it might be a passing thing, I’d never had anything like this happen to me before, but the second episode I had that night was the worst one I’d had. I described everything to them as best as I could. They gave me an ECG, blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen, all the normal stuff, and all the results showed pretty normal. They even took blood from me, and whatever they tested for came back fine as well. The Doctor advised me to try and not stress too much about it, he doesn’t know what it is because everything came back normal, hopefully it’ll pass, speak to my GP about if it happens again, and sent me on my way.
I went back to the hospital on Saturday after my “episode” at 1:00am. I told them that I’d been in the morning before, again tried to describe it as best as I could. They did all the same checks, even took more blood from my other arm and tested for D-dimers, troponin and some other different stuff. Everything again came back normal, nothing showed out of the ordinary. They gave me the same advice, but they added that I should try and get my GP to get one of those 24 hour ECG things for me.
I’m thankfully normally quite healthy, I’m a 26 year old male, I have hayfever, I have a minor lower back issue, and I have depression. I don’t know what it is that might be causing these “episodes” though, whether it’s stresses from work, my diet, my mental health, or something else entirely. I don’t know if there’s anything I can do that will help. I’ve tried sleeping on both sides, on my front and on my back, and it still happens to me anyway. I can’t pre-emptively do anything about it either because I’m asleep. I’m scared to go to sleep, every time this happens to me it feels like I’m about to die 🙁
I write this to you all here, with the hope that some of you reply, with kindness or with answers, or even both. Thank you for reading this, I love you all, I hope you all have a wonderful day and a wonderful life, and sound sleeping.
