TL;DR: Had symptoms for 3-4 years. Thought it was Gerd/Anxiety. But my new doctor thinks it’s sleep apnea. I’m very hopeful.
First of all, I apologize if you find grammar mistakes in this post. English is not my native language.
I’m thankful that I found this sub and the more I read, the more I’m convinced that I have Sleep Apnea. I’ve been struggling with horrible symptoms for the past 3-4 years. My symptoms were very odd, to say the least:
- Acid Reflux
- Chronic Belching
- Blurry vision
- Brain Fog
- Shortness of Breath
- Sore throat/Dry mouth
- Swollen Nasal Passage
- Waking up frequently to urinate
- Feeling unrested after sleep
- There were a few times where I woke up panicking (thought it was anxiety)
My doctor was convinced that GERD/Anxiety was causing all these issues. I took many different PPIs and anti-anxiety meds without any improvements. Then, I spent thousands of dollars on exams to make sure it’s nothing sinister.
So for the past 3-4 years, I believed it was all in my “head” because my doctor kept saying it was anxiety. I did not snore and I wasn’t overweight so this is probably the reason why my doctor thought SA wasn’t likely.
But about a month ago, things got worse. I found a new doctor and he immediately told me that I might have Sleep Apnea. And he went through some research papers showing the correlation between GERD and Sleep Apnea (or vice versa). I was very thankful because he really spent time with me to hear all of my symptoms and didn’t just disregard it as “anxiety”.
I have a sleep study on the way and I’m super excited. I’m truly hoping that I have sleep apnea (I know..it sounds really weird that I’m saying all this).
I suppose if you have “classic” SA symptoms that it would be relatively easy to get a diagnosis. I’m curious to know how long it took you to realize you had sleep apnea?
