As the title says, the instant I fall asleep on my back I immediately feel my throat close and I wake up because I can’t breathe at all. The same thing happens when I fall asleep slumped back on the couch, but sitting up.

Sleeping on my side, two sleep studies show my AHI is around 30.

Also, I am not overweight, don’t think I have a thick neck or tongue, etc. An ENT told me I don’t look like his usual sleep apnea patients.

My question is: Does this sound unusual?

I’m trying to figure out if maybe I have sleep apnea for a different structural reason than the norm. If so, I’m thinking of trying different methods to treat it than CPAP.
