Hi r/SleepApnea, I have a couple questions for you all.
My boyfriend (26) has been having episodes of sleep apnea that last for about 3-4 days and then it goes away completely. This has been happening for the past 2 months, around every 2 weeks or so. I have noticed that the last two times, it started after he smoked a couple cigarettes (3-4 each time) with his buddies (he does not normally smoke cigarettes, only socially). The apnea is pretty bad when it happens, waking up every 2-3 minutes. But when it goes away, he sleeps completely fine, doesn’t even snore.
That being said, here are my questions:
1) Did anyone else have sleep apnea brought on by smoking cigarettes?
2) Has anyone else had episodic sleep apnea, or does it typically stay and persist once it comes?
3) Do you think his sleep apnea will progress to being constant, every-night occurance? If so, how quickly do you think this will happen? (I think it will, but I’m hoping it is not until he is a bit older, his dad recently started using CPAP).
4) Should he try to get a sleep test? I’m worried that if he goes for a sleep test it will be on a “normal” night and they will tell him he is fine and doesn’t need anything. Anyone ever have a strangely good night while taking a sleep test and have trouble getting treatment?
Thank you all for sharing your stories, I have learned a lot in the last couple weeks by browsing this sub.
