I’ve been on CPAP for about 2 years now and for the most part it’s been very successful. I’ve lost 50+ lbs and I’m probably in better shape than anytime in the past 5-10 years. Doctor says my BP is down a little as well, so that’s a good trend too (still need more work though).

That being said, I live in a really, really dry climate (northern Canada). I think it’s literally classified as a desert.

For the past two years I’ve had inflamed tonsils (they coincided with the CPAP), which my doctor doesn’t seem too worried about. In the summer, it’s almost a non-issue, but they are still definitely inflamed. My throat / tonsils are usually raw enough that I can’t drink pop / bubble water (no loss!) and even something like olive oil “burns”. I keep a humidity meter in my house and in the summer it can hit 40 percent, which is usually when I’m not complaining. In the winter the meter reads “too low to detect”.

I have done a fair bit of reading in the sub and my understanding is that the sore throat / tonsils are likely due to leak rate? I’ve got the airsense 10 at max humidity (I do have a heated hose but find it uncomfortable). I’ve also added a second humidifier in the bedroom and my humidity meter registered a whopping 60 percent last night.

Nevertheless, I still woke up coughing and spit out a tiny bit of phlegm (same color type as my nose, I assume it just “falls” back?) 🙁 It feels like waking up from surgery, but to a much lesser degree (ie. my throat feels like something has been roughhousing with it).

Here are the details of my setup:

-Airsense 10 for her

-Philips Dreamwear hybrid mask (not the nasal one, the “full” face one)

-Heated tube (turned off)

(The dreamwear made starting CPAP really easy, but I’m hoping the F20 isn’t too foreign)

Pressure : 7-12 (reduced from 18 I think)

Humidity : max

ramp: 10 mins I think

I have a hunch that it’s the mask? I have a very big head / mouth (plus a nose that is askew) and I notice that I constantly have to overtighten the dreamwear, to the point where my skin breaks 🙁

I’ve just ordered the Airfit F20 from amazon, as I am a mouth breather. Some have suggested this will help with seal?

– Should I decrease the pressure as well?

– This is potentially dumb, but is my throat permanently damaged? I bought the machine through amazon and I’m worried I didn’t set it up right.

I’m going to try and upload some oscar screenshots, I’m just worried about anonymity. Reddit doesn’t let me put them inline?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’ve got pretty bad chronic anxiety and I seem to think I’ve got covid each morning. 🙁
