For the last couple of years I’ve been experiencing a phenomenon where I will instantly wake from a deep sleep in a blind panic, completely unable to breathe. After a few seconds, I calm down and can catch my breath again. It’s a horrible and honestly pretty terrifying experience. It happens maybe 3 times a month.

I did a sleep study, and the results indicated I was not having a significant enough number of events to have sleep apnea. I’m also not overweight and relatively young (25). The doctor recommended relaxation techniques as apparently anxiety can be a cause, but my anxiety issues are relatively mild.

The problem still hasn’t gone away and the periods in which I can’t catch my breath are getting longer. Its pretty frightening and I don’t know what to do, does anyone have any experience with this who can help?
